Neuro-Affirming Autism and ADHD Assessments

For many neurodivergent adults--especially women, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ folks, and/or those who try to "blend in"--autism or ADHD may have been missed as a child. But it's never too late to improve your understanding of yourself and how your brain works. I find that we can have greater compassion for ourselves once we begin to understand why we are the way we are, instead of thinking "There's something wrong with me" or feeling like you don't fit in anywhere.

My approach to autism and ADHD assessments is neuro-affirming, meaning that I don't pathologize neurodivergence, but instead view autism and ADHD as brain types that come with unique strengths and challenges. During the assessment, I will ask open-ended questions about your own internal experience rather than making a diagnosis based solely on my observations. I approach the assessment process from a collaborative perspective where we reach a result together instead of me "giving" you a diagnosis. I also offer information and affirming resources as part of the assessment process. Being neurodivergent within a neurotypical society is often the biggest challenge, and having deeper insight into how your brain works and access to resources and supports can help make that process a little easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out to sparkerzillich@sparkztherapy.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

I provide autism/ADHD assessments for anyone ages 14+ located in New Mexico at the time of the assessment

Step 1: Set up a free initial 10 minute consultation where we will briefly discuss your goals for the assessment process and how best to move forward

Step 2: Fill out an online intake form and questionnaires that I will send you

Step 3: Meet for the assessment sessions in-person or online (usually between 2-5 sessions depending on which assessments you are interested in)

Step 4: Meet for a final debrief session where you and I review the assessment(s) and results and discuss relevant resources and supports.

Step 5: I will provide you with a letter and/or detailed report summarizing the results of the assessment if desired.

There are lots of potential benefits to getting an assessment!

First, regardless of the assessment result, the process encourages and facilitates self-reflection and deepening your level of insight to how your brain works and why you are the way you are. The process can help clarify why you feel the way you do about specific situations or sensory triggers, or help explain the way you interact with people, and help you get to know yourself on a deeper level as you explore your brain type.

Second, the results of the assessment can help clarify specific academic and/or workplace accommodations that might be helpful for you as you navigate those often neuro-typical spaces. A letter and/or report may be provided at the end of the assessment process if desired for yourself and/or to provide to an HR department or Accessibility Office. Please note that some organizations/workplaces/schools may require an ADHD/Autism diagnosis from a doctor (such as a Primary Care Physician, Psychiatrist, or Psychologist).

If you are seeking an assessment for federal disability benefits or to qualify for certain government workplace accommodations, please note you may need to get an assessment from a psychologist, psychiatrist, or neuropsychologist. Most workplaces and educational institutions will accept a diagnosis from a qualified Masters level clinician (LCSW, LPCC), but it is not guaranteed.

Additionally, there may be potential limitations to having a documented autism/ADHD diagnosis for insurance, employment, and/or political safety concerns. If this is a concern for you, we can discuss alternative options that don't involve a documented autism or ADHD diagnosis.

I accept most health insurance plans which usually cover the cost for an assessment. If you prefer to pay out of pocket, the private pay rate is $110 per session. Please note, ADHD assessments usually take about 2 sessions, Autism assessments usually take 2-3 sessions, and for both it usually takes 4 sessions. I also offer a sliding scale rate if the cost is a barrier.

Regardless if we meet in-person or virtually I encourage you to have any comfort items easily accessible if desired (such as fidgets, something to drink/eat, a blanket, support animal, etc.). You are also welcome to have a supportive family member or friend with you for the assessment if you'd like, which may be helpful for questions about your childhood, but it is not required.
